Many thanks for raising the subject Roger. It has come to light that one of the main sources of reference books for ships crests and mottos, TP Stopford Admiralty Ships Badges, has the incorrect motto.
Many thanks to Alan Benn for providing the replacement crest with the correct motto. A full size version has been forwarded to BJ. It appears that Stopfords book has caused much confusion, not least with the firm who made the gold wire blazer badge of the Eagle crest and motto.

Sorry to bang on, but I cannot find any other usage of "Arduis Ad Solem", whereas "Arduus Ad Solem" ,as in "lifted up to / striving for the sun",has been used by both Manchester University and Falcon College,Zimbabwe.

Further to my last, the Fourth Commission book and the History both have photos of the three ship RAS, taken during Beira Patrol. The tanker is RFA Tidepool, the storeship RFA Reliant.

I have commissioning books for both the fourth and fifth commissions, as well as a History of Eagle. All three give the motto as Arduus ad Solem (By labour to the sun)

Although one of the Commission Book covers shows the motto as "Arduus ad solem" it may be a publishers error.
Expert opinion is that:
"Arduis ad solem" makes more sense, and this translates roughly as "Through great difficulties to the heights" (or literally, to the sun).

Oh dear !! I HATE to say this , but....the ship's "motto" is actually Arduus Ad Solem, not Arduis Ad Solem (Arduis would confer a different meaning ).Sorry, but there we are !
